The first thing I do is protect the areas that are not to be touched by paint. I wipe the surface with grease and wax remover.
I use 400 grit paper and with lots of water I sand the surface to be painted. This helps to thoroughly clean the surface, and it helps promote adhesion of the paint and clear.
These are the masks that I designed on my computer and cut with my plotter.
I apply the vinyl masks and use masking tape to protect the rest of the helmet.
I wipe the helmet down with grease and wax remover again, and clean it up with a tack cloth. No I can start spraying the silver base where my flames will go.
I unmask the helmet and clean up all the tape residue with grease and wax remover. This is what it looks like afer unmasking and before clear.
The helmet is clean and ready for clear. I apply four coats using a touch up gun.
This is the finished product, after clear and after buffing and polishing. As you can see, the end result is smooth as glass. The white dusty syuff you see met are acually metallic sparkles. Helmets Home |
